Are businesses responsible for cleaning sidewalks after a snow storm? What if a business property is vacant?
An owner or occupant of a property is required to remove all snow and ice from a sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of any storm. When ice has formed that cannot be removed, material to keep the sidewalk from being dangerous must be applied. If the Department of Public Works is required to clear snow and ice or otherwise make a sidewalk safe for pedestrians, the owner will be contacted and expenses charged to the owner. If unpaid, the owner may be assessed a special tax to be collected in the general tax roll. Citations may also be issued as per §191.5 of the municipal code.
